Did the Grinch really steal Christmas?

Maybe Christmas, the Grinch thought, doesn't come from a store.“Maybe Christmas, the Grinch thought, doesn’t come from a store.”

I am a fan of Dr. Seuss. I can remember making and eating green eggs and ham in my kindergarten class and being so excited about it! Thanks Ms. Booth! As a mother, I subscribed to a book club that regularly shipped Dr. Seuss books to our home so that our son could enjoy the stories as I did as a child. We still have the books and I plan to pass them down through several generations.

As an adult I am still amazed by the quotable moments that permeate many of Dr. Seuss’ texts that are designed for children. I recently stumbled upon one from the infamous “The Grinch that Stole Christmas”. It is one of my favorite Christmas movies to watch. In this book, it reads, “Maybe Christmas, the Grinch thought, doesn’t come from a store.”

When I read this, I literally put my head down in amazement. Dr. Seuss has done it again! Lawwwwwwwd! All this time I have been loving these books and never once focused on this single line…this single thought from the Grinch. Would you still be happy without having received anything from a store? Think about that.

Christmas is supposed to be a time of giving and celebration of the birth of Jesus the Christ. It has sadly become one of consumerism and greed. It saddens me. So many of us are stressed because of family shenanigans, the thoughts of not having/giving enough or simply because we miss a loved one’s presence.

The truth is…Christmas is a stolen holiday, but we will talk about that later. For now, please just take this day to focus on what really matters – God is Love.

Peace and Merry Christmas…
