Juneteenth – A celebration of freedom

Happy Juneteenth, Fam! I took some time to unplug, reflect and release only to be moved to write on this fabulous day – Juneteenth. While most Americans will celebrate independence on July 4th of each year, there is something amazingly special about June 19th (or Juneteenth).

What is Juneteenth?

Juneteenth is the commemoration of the date by which all slaves were notified of their freedom and/or released from slavery – June 19, 1865. Though the Emancipation Proclamation took effect in 1863, it met some resistance. On June 19, 1865 some of the last slaves were released in Galveston, Texas. This is the day we celebrate as Juneteenth.

Why Celebrate?

What? Pardon me? All people should celebrate. The United States of America would not be what it is today had it not been for the unmentionable, cruel and unjust implementation of slavery. Souls of human beings were destroyed, minimized and disregarded while making America great.

Be Free

Today is a day to remember our ancestors. Today is a day to express gratitude for the struggles and strength that have been encoded into your DNA. Today is a day to celebrate.

Identify those thoughts, habits and circumstances that keep you bound. Make a plan to release the shackles and live your best life.

Man throwing down shackles

Peace and Love.
